How-to Flush DNS on an iPhone

Posted on May 18, 2012 1:44 PM

I was troubleshooting something on my phone a while back and through the process, I had realized that I should flush the DNS cache on my phone. The problem was, however, I had no idea how to go about doing that. Of course, I could just reboot the phone and be done with it, but that took time and if I had to do it multiple times, it quickly became impractical. Instead, I stumbled upon a much simpler solution: put the phone in airplane mode. This completely disables all network connectivity until you drop out of airplane mode again and has the natural side effect of flushing the DNS cache of the phone.

Wow. Thank you so much for providing that solution to turn your phone onto airplane mode. My hosting provider changed servers and I couldn't look at any of my sites on my phone and had no idea how to flush the DNS!

Thanks for posting about it!

This doesn't actually work. I'm in a definite dns issue right now and rebooting, airplane, nothing clears the bad address.

Years later, still good advice. Beats restarting the phone.

@b - It may be the DNS servers not fully propagated, can take 72 hours.

I had to change the name server for a domain, and after that, the ipad could not find the web server.

NOPE, once IOS gets a bad route to any server, nothing seems to help. Airplane mode on/off: no joy... reboot: no joy... hard reset: no joy.

I even rebooted the wifi router, no joy.

Other devices on the same network were A-Okay! Not the ipad.

I set the DNS TTL to one hour. Waited 4 hours. Still no joy on the {{ iOS 8.1 on iPad Air 128GB Wi-Fi + Cellular, Verizon. }}

Turned off Wi-Fi, and Cellular found the website A-Okay!

Turned Wi-Fi on again, still no joy.

Waited another hour. Still no joy.
