"Access Denied" Error When Opening Some PDF Documents After Installing Adobe Reader 10

Posted on January 3, 2011 9:43 PM

Adobe Reader 10.0 is installed in a protected mode. One of the features of the secure mode is:

  • Cannot open PDF files whose source is DFS or NFS: PDF files in shared locations on a distributed  or networked file system (DFS/NFS) cannot be opened. Attempting to open such a file results in an error opening this document. Access denied."

The solution is to disable protected mode by completing the following steps:

  1. Within Adobe Reader, go to Edit > Preferences > General and deselect Enable Protected Mode at startup.
  2. Restart Reader.

Thanks for this tip. I figured this had to be a software configuration issue. I just couldn't put my finger on what setting I needed to activate or deactivate.

I just updated a client on the domain with reader 10 and just like that they couldn't access any .pdfs that were shared over the domain. I was just about to completely remove adobe reader 10 and find an older version to install on the computer before reading this.

Worked like a charm.

I had the same problem with Adobe Reader X (ver 10) I didn't know what the heck was going on. Finally, i uninstalled it and installed an older version (ver 8) and it worked great.

I frequently had the same issue when opening files saved in other user's Documents folder, even when logged in as the Administrator.
